Mr Tobby Fu, Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Institute for Innovation, Translation and Policy Research of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), took the stage at the Cyberport Venture Capital Forum 2025 (CVCF) on 6 and 7 November. As a panelist in the "AI Investors Circle (AiIC): Driving Innovation Ecosystem - Hong Kong Universities & VCs Shaping the Next Generation of Startups," he shared Hong Kong's unique edge in the global startup landscape.
Mr Fu emphasised how Hong Kong university startups stand out among counterparts in Singapore and U.S. Silicon Valley, benefiting from real-world use cases of rapid and cost-effective manufacturing capabilities from Chinese Mainland, particularly the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). This positions Hong Kong as a prime innovation launchpad for deep tech and AI.
Mr Fu addressed key issues regarding the newly launched Inno Nexus platform at HKBU and its collaboration with venture funds during the forum. He outlined a robust partnership framework focusing on three pillars─capital, mentorship and market access—to support sustainable growth for startups in the early-stage:
Capital: Launching a HK$50 million e-fund to co-invest with matching investments from venture capital partners.
Mentorship: Providing tailored coaching for venture capital, validating minimum viable products (MVPs) and conducting pilot trials in the GBA.
Market Access: Establishing alliances such as the International GreenTech Alliance and the Global Circularity Incubator to connect startups with global distributors and beta users.
The forum brought together top minds from universities, strategic investors and visionary innovators, fostering discussions on AI and venture capital reshaping Hong Kong's ecosystem. HKBU will continue to facilitate knowledge transfer and innovation translation through collaborations and exchanges with the industry, contributing to the global technology innovation sector.
