Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) was invited to participate in the KYOTO Smart City Expo 2025 held in Kyoto, Japan in early October. Led by Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer, the HKBU delegation shared the University's practical experience in interdisciplinary industry-academia-research collaboration and technology translation, showcasing innovative solutions with high social value.
This year’s Expo brought together scientific research enterprises and innovative institutions from Japan and around the world to explore future development of smart cities. Professor Lau delivered a speech titled "University-Driven Innovation: Translating Academic Research into Public Health Safety", in which he highlighted HKBU’s major breakthroughs in the modernisation of Chinese medicine. He showcased the University’s pioneering Chinese herbal medicine research, which has received U.S. FDA approval for clinical trials, as well as the discovery of active ingredients from natural plants using high-throughput screening technology. Both demonstrated HKBU’s interdisciplinary strength in integrating traditional medicine with modern technology.
In the Expo, HKBU set up a booth in the Smart City themed zone to showcase the University’s latest achievements in medical technology, sustainable development, and art technology. The booth attracted numerous government representatives and industry leaders, who engaged in exchanges and explored opportunities for future collaboration.
Participation in the Expo further solidified HKBU’s connections with the global innovation community while expanding its collaborative network in the fields of smart cities and public health. The University remains committed to promoting technology translation for the benefit of society, and to contributing towards a healthier and smarter future for cities worldwide.
