In a strategic effort to strengthen technological exchange between Hong Kong and the Mainland, a delegation from the Institute for Innovation and Technology (IIT) of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) recently conducted an official visit to Jiangsu Province. The delegation was warmly received by Ms Ni Hanyi, Deputy Director General of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology, where the primary objective was to explore avenues for deep collaboration in scientific research and innovation-driven entrepreneurship.
The delegation gained a deep understanding of the region's technology cooperation models through an excellent overview from Ms Ni Hanyi. They also visited the Bureau of Investment Promotion of Jiangning Development Zone, with the invaluable support of Hong Kong-Jiangsu Science and Technology Innovation Center operated by the Jiangsu SOHO Holdings Group Zhongshan Company Limited. They engaged with key government leaders to understand the region's industrial priorities and investment landscape.
Throughout the visit, discussions underscored a mutual commitment to bridging academic research with industrial application. Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer of HKBU, delivered a detailed presentation on HKBU’s distinctive entrepreneurial ecosystem, highlighting the robust support from the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) and various government initiatives that underpin the University's startup culture. He elaborated on how Hong Kong's academic incubation model—backed by government funding schemes and institutional support—nurtures deep-tech ventures from the laboratory to the marketplace. The delegation gained significant insights through meetings with leading venture capital firms, including Nanjing Venture Capital and Suzhou Oriza Holdings, as well as prominent pharmaceutical companies such as Jiangsu Kanion Pharmaceutical Co.,ltd.
The delegation had the invaluable opportunity to visit the renowned hospitals specialising in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. These visits facilitated a rich exchange of knowledge and sparked numerous new ideas for future collaboration, particularly in the areas of integrative medicine, digital health, and clinical research partnerships.
The delegation was grateful to listen to hear insights from government officials, investors, industry partners, and medical professionals during the visit. These insights into the region's scientific priorities and funding mechanisms will be invaluable as HKBU IIT moves forward in establishing tangible projects and partnerships in Jiangsu Province.
