Shanghai Film Group visits HKBU to explore art tech and AI-driven transformation in film industry

Ms Wang Juan, Party Secretary and Chairwoman of the Shanghai Film (Group) Co., Ltd., led a high-level delegation to visit HKBU on 21 March. The visit focused on in-depth exchanges on topics including how art tech empowers the content industry and the profound transformation of the film and television ecosystem in the AI era.

Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, led the delegation on a campus tour. Professor Johnny M Poon, Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research) and Dean of the School of Creative Arts of HKBU, provided a detailed introduction to several key laboratories and their research achievements and operations within the Jockey Club Campus of Creativity, including the Jockey Club White Box Experimental Space, which features 70 speakers for creating precise 3D sound effects and 4D immersive experiences.

The delegation also visited the Visualization Research Centre (VRC) guided by Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Chair Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts and Director of the VRC of HKBU, experiencing groundbreaking projects like the Immersive 360-degree 3D LED Cinema System that redefines 21st-century cinema.

During the exchange, Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer of HKBU, stated: "HKBU is committed to transforming world-class art tech research into market-competitive industrial solutions. Through our robust innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, we not only incubate promising startups, but also drive the seamless integration of academic research with the film and television industry, providing continuous innovative momentum for the digital transformation of the content sector."

HKBU has long been at the international forefront of media, film, and art tech. Ms Wang highly commended HKBU’s achievements in integrating cutting-edge technology with art and fostering industry-academia-research collaboration and knowledge transfer. Both parties agreed to establish a regular cooperation mechanism. Through in-depth integration of industry, academia and research, they will jointly drive high-quality innovation to address the challenges of industry transformation brought about by the AI era.
