HKBU delegation joins Jiangsu and Shanghai innovation events to advance cross-disciplinary innovation and technology transfer

16 Sep 2026

The delegation of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) recently participated in a series of industry-academia events in Jiangsu, Nanjing and Shanghai, including the 2026 Jiangsu Industry-University-Research Cooperation Conference, the 2026 Pujiang Innovation Forum and its concurrent InnoMatch Technology Transfer Conference; and the 2026 Annual Innovation Seminar of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Technology Transfer Cooperation Network (SHK-TTN), to strengthen collaboration in cross-disciplinary innovation and technology transfer with universities, research institutes and industry partners in the Chinese Mainland.

The HKBU delegation, led by Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer, included Mr Edmond Lam, Director of the Knowledge Transfer Office and Miss Miya Wang, Manager of the Institute for Innovation and Translation. The delegation attended the 2026 Jiangsu Industry-University-Research Cooperation Conference hosted by the Department of Science and Technology of Jiangsu Province in Nanjing to exchange views with representatives from universities, research institutes and industry on deepening industry-academia-research cooperation and accelerating the translation of research outcomes into applications.

In the following days, the delegation attended various exchange activities in Shanghai. Professor Lau delivered a keynote speech titled “The Path to Technology Maturity through Cross-Domain Collaborative Innovation: Building Bridges from the Laboratory to the Market”, at the 2026 Technology Manager Leaders Conference, organised by the 2026 InnoMatch Technology Transfer Conference sharing insights on how universities can advance cross-disciplinary innovation and bring research outcomes from the laboratory to the market. He pointed out that technology validation, funding, marketisation and a shortage of talent are major gaps in the translation process, which can be bridged through cross-disciplinary collaborative innovation, strategic alliances, and collaborative platforms.

Professor Lau also introduced HKBU's practices in interdisciplinary fields such as the modernisation of traditional Chinese medicine and art technology, including CDD-2101, the first botanical drug from Hong Kong to receive the approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical trials, and the world's first Future Cinema System. He elaborated on how the university has built an internal transformation ecosystem to drive research outcomes from the laboratory to the market through platforms such as the Institute for Innovation and Translation and the Knowledge Transfer Office. He further emphasised that technology managers should not only facilitate project implementation but also act as "guardians" to ensure project success within complex institutional systems.

Mr Edmond Lam also took part in a roundtable forum at the 2026 Technology Manager Leaders Conference, discussing with peers from universities, research institutes and technology transfer service organisations on topics including the translation of university research outcomes, talent development and industry-academia-research collaboration.
